If you’ve ever seen a table that looks like a river runs through it — or one that somehow captures the depth of the ocean — you’ve seen epoxy resin in action. But what is an epoxy resin table, really? For me, it’s part furniture, part art, and part obsession. Here’s what makes them so unique — and why I keep coming back to them.
What Is an Epoxy Table Made Of?
At its core, an epoxy table combines natural wood with epoxy resin. The resin starts as a two-part liquid (resin + hardener) that cures into a rock-solid, crystal-clear surface.
- We pour it between wood slabs (or over wood) to create rivers, waves, or custom designs
- Once cured, it’s extremely strong, waterproof, and scratch-resistant
- The result? A table that feels part sculpture, part functional furniture
This flexibility is why I build everything from epoxy river tables to full resin tops that ditch wood entirely.
Types of Epoxy Tables You’ll See (And I’ve Built)
Epoxy River Tables: The original resin table look
A raw slab split down the middle with resin poured between — creating a flowing ‘river’ through the wood.
Ocean Resin Tables: Waves, pigments, and depth
Layered pours with foamy waves, embedded shells, and rich ocean pigments. These are some of my most popular builds.
Resin Fill Tables: Filling natural flaws
Cracks, voids, and imperfections in wood get filled with vibrant resin colors — turning flaws into standout features.
Full Resin Tops
Minimalist and bold — pure resin poured into full tabletops with or without wood accents.
What Is an Epoxy Table Used For?
These tables work just about anywhere:
- Dining tables
- Conference room tables
- Office desks
- Entryway consoles
- Bar tops
- Wall art and statement pieces
Whether it's a showpiece dining table or a smaller resin coffee table, the functional durability makes it perfect for real-world use.
Are Epoxy Resin Tables Durable?
Short answer: yes — when built properly.
- Scratch-resistant and heat-resistant with a high-quality finish
- Waterproof and stain-resistant thanks to its sealed surface
- Durable enough for daily use in homes, offices, and commercial spaces
For a full breakdown, I go into detail here: Are Epoxy Tables Durable?
What Are the Disadvantages of Epoxy Resin Tables?
Nothing’s perfect. Here’s what I tell clients upfront:
- Deep pours require long cure times
- Extensive sanding and finishing is labor-intensive
- UV exposure can yellow cheaper resins (which is why I only use premium UV-stable resin)
- Scratches or chips require professional repair (which I also cover here: How I Repaired My Epoxy Table)
How Long Does an Epoxy Table Last?
With proper care, decades. I build these as long-term functional art pieces — not short-term décor. The finish holds up, the structure remains stable, and the resin resists wear far better than traditional wood alone.
It’s one of the biggest reasons epoxy resin tables are quickly becoming long-term investment pieces in both homes and businesses.
How Much Will 1 Gallon of Table Top Epoxy Cover?
One gallon of resin typically covers:
- 12-15 square feet at 1/8" thick for flood coats
- For deeper pours, expect 2-5 gallons depending on project size
For reference: my larger epoxy dining tables often require 5-10 gallons for deep pours.
How Much Does an Epoxy Table Cost?
Costs vary wildly based on size, wood type, resin volume, design complexity, and base selection. My builds typically range:
- Small coffee tables: $400 – $1,500
- Custom dining tables: $3,500 – $9,000+
- Large conference builds: $10,000+

What Makes Epoxy Resin Tables Worth It?
For me? It’s all about what they offer:
- One-of-a-kind design tailored to you
- Durability that outlasts trends
- A conversation-starting centerpiece
- Personal touches like preserved wedding flowers, shells, or even family heirlooms embedded inside
Thinking About Building One?
I walk every client through a fully custom process:
- You send your size, style, and inspiration
- We select your live edge wood and resin pigments together
- I design, build, pour, and hand-finish the entire piece
- Your custom epoxy table arrives fully finished and ready to wow

Final Thoughts: What Is an Epoxy Table Worth?
Yes, they’re more expensive than mass-market tables. But what you’re really buying is:
- Craftsmanship you won’t find in mass production
- Functional artwork that lasts decades
- Completely personalized furniture made just for your space
